Beer gardens, icehouses, and open-air spots worth leaving the AC for.
Finding a great outdoor bar in Houston summer is a specific skill. The heat is real, the humidity is realer, and most patios are an afterthought. But Houston also has some of the best outdoor drinking culture in the country — sprawling beer gardens, classic icehouses, and multi-level patio bars that make the sweat feel worth it. Here’s where to go.
1. Little Woodrow’s — Multiple Locations
📱 @littlewoodrowshtx
For 30 years, Little Woodrow’s has been the go-to spot for good times and cold beer in Houston — the backyard stomping ground where friends and strangers came together to escape the everyday, cheer on the home team, and raise a glass. Three inner-loop locations to choose from:
Heights
📍 2631 White Oak Dr, Houston, TX 77009
🕐 Mon–Fri: 2pm–2am | Sat–Sun: 11am–2am
Midtown
📍 2306 Brazos St, Houston, TX 77006
🕐 Mon–Fri: 1pm–2am | Sat–Sun: 11am–2am
EaDo
📍 801 Saint Emmanuel St, Houston, TX 77003
🕐 Mon–Thu: 3pm–2am | Fri: 12pm–2am | Sat–Sun: 11am–2am
Happy hour every weeknight, steak night on Wednesdays, $5 pitchers after 9pm. Every location has a large outdoor patio, yard games, dog-friendly seating, and sports on every screen.
The move: Go on turtle race night — check their events calendar for the date at your nearest location.
2. Kirby Ice House — Three Locations
📱 @kirbyicehouse.htx
Kirby Ice House boasts a much more expansive gathering area than most Houston bars — 6,500 square feet inside and a one-acre backyard. The ranch-style setup with reclaimed wood finishes features 60 beers on tap, food trucks, and games like cornhole and horseshoes in a tree-lined, dog-friendly backyard. Three locations means one is probably close to you.
Upper Kirby (Original)
📍 3333 Eastside St, Houston, TX 77098
🕐 Mon–Fri: 2pm–2am | Sat–Sun: 11am–2am
Memorial
📍 1015 Gessner Rd, Houston, TX 77055
🕐 Mon–Fri: 2pm–2am | Sat–Sun: 11am–2am
Heights
📍 1421 N Loop W, Houston, TX 77008
🕐 Mon–Fri: 2pm–2am | Sat–Sun: 11am–2am
Upper Kirby is the original and most iconic. Memorial is the most spacious. Heights is the most convenient if you’re already in that part of town. All three have the same massive outdoor setup, 60+ beers on tap, food trucks, and dog-friendly patios.
The move: Cold beer, cornhole, food truck, bring the group.
3. Axelrad Beer Garden — Midtown
📍 1517 Alabama St, Houston, TX 77004
🕐 Mon–Thu: 2pm–12am | Fri–Sat: 12pm–2am | Sun: 12pm–12am
📱 @axelradhouston
This is the kind of place where you show up for one drink and end up staying all night. Axelrad’s massive outdoor space is packed with hammocks, picnic tables, and a rotating mix of live music and movie nights. The crowd is easygoing and social — perfect for groups or solo hangs. A short walk from Minute Maid Park, it’s also the best pre- and post-Astros game spot in the city. During World Cup season it’s running free watch parties with live music, DJs, and drink specials.
The move: Frozen gin and tonic, find a hammock. Check their Instagram for upcoming events.
4. Heights Bier Garten — The Heights
📍 1433 N Shepherd Dr, Ste 1, Houston, TX 77008
🕐 Mon–Fri: 3pm–2am | Sat–Sun: 11am–2am
📱 @heightsbiergarten
From the Kirby Group, Heights Bier Garten takes the typical beer garden concept to stylish new heights — a chic interior lounge, porch swings, and cozy firepits, with 94 taps of beer, cider, mead, and wine. The setup is unique: two bars bookending a large central outdoor garden — one dedicated beer bar, one full liquor bar. No table service, which keeps things relaxed. Dog-friendly, family-friendly before 9pm, and one of the best tap selections in Houston.
The move: 94 beers on tap, porch swing, fire pit when it cools down.
5. Social Beer Garden HTX — Midtown
📍 Midtown Houston (near McGowen Station)
🕐 Happy Hour Mon–Fri: Open–8pm | Open daily
📱 @socialbeergardenhtx
One of the largest outdoor bar venues in Houston — two floors, a massive beer garden, and a rooftop patio with the biggest outdoor LED screen in the city. 44 beers on draft, over 100 craft beers, weekly events, food trucks, and free games including table tennis, pool, and darts. Free parking behind the bar and walkable from McGowen Station.
The move: Rooftop patio, World Cup watch parties on the biggest outdoor screen in the city.
Honorable Mentions
Patterson Park (2205 Patterson St, Heights | @pattersonparkhtx) — Houston’s treehouse patio bar right off the White Oak Bayou trail. Multi-level, dog-friendly, 40+ TVs, rotating food trucks. Ride your bike on the trail and get 10% off your tab.
Eight Row Flint (1039 Yale St, Heights | @eight_row_flint) — The icehouse that started it all in the Heights. Barrel-poured bourbon, handmade tortillas, serious outdoor energy.
Botanic Beer Garden (Sawyer Heights | @botanicbeergarden) — Two patios, string lights, local draft beer, dog-friendly. The greenest patio in Houston.
The honest summer strategy: Go early or go late. Houston outdoor bars between 6pm and 8pm in June are survivable. At 9pm with a breeze and a cold drink, they’re genuinely great.
